[name] Hydrogen [intro] Hydrogen is the third most abundant element on the Earth's surface, but by far the most abundant element in the universe, constituting approximately 75% of its chemical elemental mass. At standard conditions H occurs as a colorless, highly combustible diatomic gas H². Naturally occurring elemental H is relatively rare on Earth, and instead most H is found in chemical compounds like water and hydrocarbons. The British scientist Henry Cavendish is usually credited for the discovery of elemental hydrogen, even though the formation of this gas was already discovered in centuries before upon the dissolution of iron in sulfuric acid. The naming of the element was done by A. L. Lavoisier in 1783, based on the Greek words hydro, meaning water, and genes, meaning creator. [image] This is the current image description.
